I recently got my own Black Bear Classic and here are my thoughts:

What I like about the knife:

1. My blade came hair shaving sharp right out of the box. VG-1 San Mai III steel is great because it has a hard inner core, which helps it to hold it’s edge.

The outer layers are softer steel and give the knife rust resistance and flexibility.

2. Double Edge means double the chance to cut yourself. Cold Steel uses two hilts on this knife, which are made from 300 series stainless steel. This is the perfect way to protect your fingers from slipping up unto the blade.

3. Both edges are hollow ground and beautifully polished giving the BBC a custom knife-like appearance.

4. The Micarta handle is smooth and sexy while being durable enough to last a lifetime.

5. Not only is this knife pretty to look at, but the hard plastic sheath is rugged enough to be carried overseas for military use or even camping/wilderness survival.

What I didn’t like:

The Black Bear Classic is one of my favorite Cold Steel knives in every way possible. I have nothing negative to say about it.

Overall:

With a suggested retail value of $409.99, the Black Bear Classic is not your everyday knife. It is truly beautiful enough to put on display and wow your friends, while being strong enough to use for almost any task that you can imagine.

The time is early 5:33 to be exact. the thundering sound has woken me up early. As I orient myself I am surprised by the lack of any grogginess. As I stand up still pondering on the fact that I am totally alert and fully conscious almost eager to start my day. The slightest hint of wanting to go back to bed has disappeared. As I pull back the curtain to examine the activity in the night sky. I ask myself is it the beginning of tornado season or are the clouds challenging each other similar to the horn clashing that occurs between mountain rams.

It is now time to begin my morning mild chaos that awaits me before I start the day. As I manage my way to the kitchen thinking of the wonderful coffee brewing. Soon to be running thru my veins. As I fill my coffee cup with a little more than usual, I think to myself this should be enough to get me through the morning rough. As I make my way back to the bathroom I unconsciously dodge the corner of the bedroom door frame, the one that eagerly awaits my little toe each morning.

Outside the rain plays its rhythmic sound. On what seems like hundreds of tiny drums. After cleaning off the bathroom counter, I lazily gaze at my reflection that appears in the mirror before me. A soft voice in my head whispers lets get rid of those whiskers that slowly appeared during the long hours of last nights sleep. For a moment I wonder what I would look like with a full beard and just as fast as my heart skips a beat the thought is gone. I examine my facial hair and collect my thoughts. Its now time for my shower and then my shave.

After the shower I instinctively slide my finger across the steamed up mirror. A victim of shower fog. I remember a friend telling me of a remedy for a steamed mirror. He suggest that I spray shaving cream on to a clean cloth and rub the shaving cream into the mirror then wipe it off. I think to myself I’ll try it. As I apply my friends questionable information. There is no particular pattern to my method. Before me my mirrored reflection begins to come together like a jigsaw puzzle.

As the steam drifts slowly away. The next few minutes I spend Admiring the cleanliness of my mirror. Try as I might I can not help but to be proud of myself. I leaned in to get a better look at myself. The thought of his remedy working, left me with a comforting eagerness for tomorrow mornings results.

As I rinse my mouth and my tooth brush before putting it away I find myself admiring the cleanliness of the mirror once again. Now on to my shave. I recall my younger days when I didn’t have to shave and thinking it’ll be years before I do. How nice it was to have an ice smooth face. The alarm clock next to my bed with large blue numbers tells me I have plenty of time to turn this scruffy face into something new.

In the distance the sound of soft rain hitting the ground mixes with a song coming from my clock radio. as I apply pre-shave oil to my shaggy face I can still feel the warmth of my skin. The frogs will surely be enjoying this rainy day unfortunately the same can’t be said for those poor birds in the wet trees.

I can feel the pre-shave oil starting to work. I love this stuff! it works it really does. it softens up my skin, softens up my dry rough facial hairs so my razor slices neatly thru them as if they were tiny liquorice candy sticks. Its a wonderful thing when my hair falls away with buttery ease as the razor glides across my face and I love the smell of this stuff. Now for a dab of one of my many favorite shaving creams. Yes I said many. Women collect shoes and purses and I collect shaving oils, creams and razors.

Who would of known how much more enjoyable my shaves would become. the day I stopped fighting the warm feeling of a new purchase and indulged myself by adding a few good razors to the mix. Long gone are my days of fighting with stubborn hair. I wonder if James Bond had more than one razor for shaving, in his shaving kit?

As I apply a fresh mint shaving cream enriched with jojoba and vitamin E. My skin savors the tingling sensation emitted by this stuff. Now to choose a razor for shaving. I take a moment and ponder on the choices before me. what am I in the mood for lets see? do I use my “Gillette Blue Tip” or will it be my “Super Shave razor” or how about my trusty “Merkur” and lets not forget my “Classic Gold Weishi” Ahh, then theres my slick “Erbe” Made in Solingen Germany.

Next comes maneuvering the razor along those prickly hairs with the precession of a skilled barber. I glide my razor hard enough to shave a peach but light enough to shave a balloon. Slide along the jaw line with the grain helps avoid any shaving pain. In just minutes the transformation is complete. The result, is a polished new fresh look. No pricklies left feeling alive and refreshed. once again my skin is at its best. Splash on some running water rinsing my skin clean before a grab the towel. Its now time for some lotion to finish my fresh shave and leave the skin smooth. in just minutes my stubbles gone away and now I’m ready to face the day.

Removing your armpit hair can make it easier to keep clean as hair can trap bacteria which, if not taken care of will result in a bad case of body odor.

Although the majority of women in the western world shave their armpits, most of them are probably doing it wrong. Classic signs are red bumps under the arms, soreness, dryness/itching and in some cases bleeding. These symptoms can easily be avoided if the following precautions are taken.

If this is the first time that you have shaved your armpits, the hair is most likely quite long. This is not ideal as it will clog up your razor. Before shaving, try to reduce the length of the hair using a set of clippers or carefully with a pair of scissors. You need the hair to be no longer than 0.2 in (5 mm) before you begin.

Preparation

1) When your armpits are due for a shave, try and coincide it with when you take a bath or a shower. Wait until the hot water has been in contact with the area to be shaved for at least five minutes before you start to shave. This way, the hair will be nice and softened. This will greatly reduce the chance of you getting a shaving rash or that horrible burning redness.

2) Never shave your armpits without applying some sort of shaving gel or cream. Make sure it is worked into a good lather as this will help the blade of the razor glide over your skin without actually grazing you.

3) Make sure you are using a clean razor preferably with a new blade.

Armpit Shaving Technique

1) Lift your arm and rest the razor at the top of your armpit. If your arm starts to get tired, rest your hand on the back of your neck. Now, apply a small amount of pressure as you slowly and gently slide the razor down in one single stroke. If you fell a slight snagging, it may be that the hairs are slightly too long. Should this be the case, use lots of short strokes to overcome the snagging sensation.

2) Always rinse the razor after each successive stroke. This will clear out any hair that may be clogging the razor. If your razor is clogged, you will have to apply more pressure until you over compensate and give yourself a nasty cut!

3) Repeat the above process until you have shaved the whole area. Now, you will get a much closer shave if you repeat the process but use up strokes instead of down. This will lift the hair slightly and give the hair a closer cut. Repeat the above step but shave upwards this time.

4) If you have sensitive skin or you suffer from red bumps after shaving, it may be wise to miss this step. Sometimes shaving upwards can cut the hair too close. As the skin relaxes, the cut end of the hair can retreat below the skin. As the hair then starts to grow back out over time, it may cause red bumps and soreness.

5) Repeat the same process but on the other armpit. That’s all there is to it!

6) If you manage to cut yourself whilst shaving, get out of the hot water and rinse the affected area with cold water. This will help to stem the bleeding. If the bleeding persists you could try using a piece of tissue paper or a styptic pencil. Obviously if the cut is quite severe you will need a band-aid.

7) Most importantly, when drying yourself after shaving your armpit try to pat-dry the area as oppose to rubbing. Rubbing is one of the main causes of dryness and soreness after shaving. You will just be irritating the area. Simply pat dry the area and apply a good quality moisturizer that has no added perfume. This will leave you with a smooth, bump free, hair free armpit.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – He looked like the same Tiger Woods, head down as he walked along the first fairway at the Masters, no one suspecting the jangled nerves he felt from taking his golf public for the first time since his private life unraveled.

One fan called out, “Welcome back, Tiger.”

Instead of ignoring him as he has done so often, Woods turned toward the man with a wave and a smile.

“To be out there in front of the people, where I have done some things that are just horrible, and for the fans to really want to see me play golf again … I mean, that felt great,” Woods said Monday. “That really did.”

Then came another tense moment — facing the media for the first time since he was exposed for cheating on his wife.

He dodged questions with rehearsed answers, refused to go into details about the therapy he sought or the state of his marriage, except that his wife won’t be at Augusta National this week. But there was a touch of humility and patience in his voice during a 35-minute press conference. He even tried to call every writer by name.

“I need to be a better man going forward than I was before,” he said. “And just because I’ve gone through treatment doesn’t mean it stops. I’m trying as hard as I possibly can each and every day to get my life better and better and stronger. And if I win championships along the way, so be it.”

One thing hasn’t changed.

Woods, a four-time champion who hasn’t hit a shot that mattered since Nov. 15, is not at the Masters simply to make amends.

“Going to go out there and try to win this thing,” he said.

And so ended a most unusual start to the Masters, which might be as tough as any round Woods plays this week.

It was a solid start in the process of restoring his image. Woods clearly was intent on mingling more with the fans than he did before the sex scandal. First, he putted a couple of balls to some kids watching alongside the 18th green. Then, a real surprise: he stopped to sign autographs while heading to the practice range.

He had not played to the crowd since winning the Australian Masters in Melbourne, where fans saw him only as golf’s best player with 82 victories and 14 majors and no rival except history.

His world caved in 12 days later with a car accident outside his home that sent him to the hospital with a busted lip that required five stitches, and a shattered image that might take years to repair.

“A lot has happened in my life over the past five months,” said Woods, who provided a few details and denials in the 47 questions he fielded from reporters who occupied all 207 seats in the media center.

Among the revelations:

• He ruptured the Achilles’ tendon in his right leg in December 2008, two months before his return from knee surgery. Woods said he was taking Vicodin for that and his left knee.

• He began taking Ambien after his father died because he was having trouble sleeping.

• He was sent to an Orlando, Fla., hospital after his Nov. 27 accident for a sore neck and a cut lip.

• He denied ever taking human growth hormone, performance-enhancing drugs or “any illegal drug.” He said he sought out Canadian doctor Anthony Galea for “blood spinning” because of his treatment on other athletes. Galea’s assistant was caught bringing HGH and other substances into the United States last year.

Woods said the government has contacted him about his association with Galea and that he would cooperate fully, “but as of right now, they have not asked for my time.”

Woods also said he would tone down his temper — and his celebrations — on the course.

In his last tournament, he flipped his driver to the turf after an errant tee shot, and the club bounced into and over the gallery. Woods retrieved the club without concern or apology.

“I’m actually going to try and obviously not get as hot when I play,” Woods said. “But then again, when I’m not as hot, I’m not going to be as exuberant, either. I can’t play one without the other, and so I made a conscious decision to try and tone down my negative outbursts. And consequently, I’m sure my positive outbursts will be calmed down, as well.”

He was calm Monday. He had a scraggly goatee — a look he has sported occasionally during his career, but rarely at a major — and smiled and made eye contact with the gallery.

Woods walked into his press conference with a comfortable smile and hugged Ronald Townsend, the first black member at Augusta National.

But he was not comfortable at the start.

He swallowed hard to steady his voice and meant to open his comments by noting he had played his practice round with Fred Couples. But instead he said “Craig” — confusing Couples with Craig Heatley, the Masters media chairman running the press conference.

And as he has done in statements on his Web site, a public apology at PGA Tour headquarters Feb. 19 and a pair of five-minute TV interviews two weeks ago, Woods owned up to his mistakes.

Not everyone was satisfied.

Even as he spoke, adult film star Josyln James — one of more than a dozen women who claims to have had affairs with Woods, watched his news conference with attorney Gloria Allred and a room full of reporters and TV cameras in New York.

Last month, James released what she said was a series of tawdry text messages from Woods that spelled out their trysts.

“I think he’s still a big, fat liar,” James said. She has asked for an apology from Woods, saying he was not truthful during their three-year relationship.

How could Woods, renowned for discipline and control, have allowed himself to leave so much evidence that can find its way into the tabloids and on the Internet. And did part of him want to get caught in such a mess?

It was one of several times Woods did not offer a direct answer.

“I don’t know,” he said. “All I know is I acted just terribly, poorly, made just incredibly bad decisions, and decisions that have hurt so many people close to me. That’s enough.”

Woods did not say what kind of treatment he received during 45 days of therapy — “That’s personal, thank you, — but said the toughest part was being away from home for son Charlie’s first birthday on Feb. 8.

“And that hurts — that hurts a lot,” Woods said. “I vowed I would never miss another one after that. I can’t go back to where I was. I want to be a part of my son’s life and my daughter’s life going forward and I missed his first birthday. That was very hard that day and something I regret, and I probably will for the rest of my life.”

Woods picked a good playing partner Monday. Couples is among the most popular players in golf with his easygoing style, and he drew most of the applause. The gallery grew in size with every hole, and fans filled an area the size of the outfield at Amen Corner, a scene typical of the final round Sunday.

“He made a blunder for a while,” Couples said. “I think he was happy to be out there. I never felt like there was going to be a problem. Jim Furyk, a close friend of Woods on the PGA Tour, joined them on the 13th hole.

“I was happy to see how positive everyone was,” Furyk said. “He got great comments from men, women and children. I felt like he did a good job saying ‘Hello’ to a bunch of people — speaking, talking and being very warm with the crowd.”

Woods said the warmth may chill a bit when Thursday rolls around — this is a major, after all, and he still has a goal of breaking the record of 18 professional majors won by Jack Nicklaus.

Several big-name sponsors dropped Woods, while Procter & Gamble Co.’s Gillette unit distanced itself by no longer including him in its ads. But the company said in a statement Monday that it looks forward to seeing Woods return to the course — and took note of his new facial hair.

“The goatee is part of a well-groomed look,” the razor and shaving cream company said.

John Sweeney, director of sports communication at the University of North Carolina’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, said the news conference did little to help or hurt Woods’ marketability and is unlikely to change the minds of the companies that dropped him, including Accenture and Gatorade.

“He’s doing some proper things to repair an incredibly damaged legacy, but it’s going to take a couple of years here,” Sweeney said.

Shaving for men is big business as more and more men take time and care over their grooming routine. And with this increase in taking care of oneself, shaving is really in focus, with more and more barbers opening up and offering the old fashioned shave.

One area that has seen an increase is the use of the DE (Double Edge) Safety Razor. While Gillette and Wilkinson attempt to get an ever increasing number of blades in a cartridge, if you want a really close shave, then the this classic razor is your best option. This is the choice shavers for men of our father and grandfathers, and no self respecting film from the fifties and sixties, that featured a shaving scene, was with out the ubiquitous DE Safety razor.

So what are the advantages of the Safety Razor?

While the DE razor will initially cost more than a standard multiblade offering, over the long run the safety blade is the economic choice. When you buy the handle part, it will be with you for life, and you only ever have to buy packs of the blades themselves. These blades last much longer, and are cheaper than the cartridge blades that go with the MACH razors or Fusion razors of this world.

The quality of the razor blade itself will mean it remains sharper than a multiblade version, and hence will last longer. In addition, as it is just metal, and no plastic parts or rubber strips etc, it is environmentally friendly.

Yes, they take a little getting used to, but used properly and with the right shaving cream and technique, the shave you get will be far superior than the modern cartridge blades and one that is much more consistent. There is something more tactile and “manly” with a Safety Razor.

So, when it comes to shaving for men, go on, man up, and get yourself a proper shaving experience and invest in a DE Safety Razor for the ultimate in close shaves.

Good skin care practices play only a minor role in whether a person develops acne Good skin care practices play only a minor role in whether a person develops acne problems. But they are essential to treating it, and to good skin health in general.

Some acne advice given, mistakenly, says that a thorough scrubbing will help prevent acne problems. Actually, washing has little effect on whether acne develops or not. The effects occur mostly afterward, once acne has occurred.

The best acne advice is that scrubbing doesn’t help, in general, though. It merely roughens and often dries out the skin. Harsh treatment of skin exposes lower layers, which then have to develop a protective coating of oil and outer dermis. In the interim, the skin is exposed to airborne and contact bacteria. The skin is our first defense against pathogens of all kinds. Removing multiple layers of it doesn’t promote good skin health.

Instead, a gentle washing with a mild cleanser is the answer. Be thorough. Since acne can occur on shoulders, back and chest as well as the face, take care of those areas in the shower. During mid-day and in the evening, a mild cleaning from underneath the jaw to the hairline is helpful.

While natural skin oil (sebum) plays a role in developing acne, removing every trace of it is not beneficial. Sebum helps keep skin flexible, which discourages micro-cracks from forming. These can provide a pathway for bacteria. It also keeps the skin from becoming excessively dry, which can again lead to small cracks in the outer layers.

Astringents that remove oil should be used sparingly. Over the counter acne treatments are specially formulated to achieve the right balance. They should be used according to the directions.

Shaving is always a challenge, of course. Men’s faces are the hardest problem to solve. Electric razors help solve it, but even they can nick the skin, especially when it contains blemishes. There is no substitute for patient, careful movements. Use of a softener before you shave can help, too.

Use of a manual or safety razor is possible. It plays a negligible role in developing acne problems. An ingrown hair and clogged pores that produce acne follow from different causes. Don’t shave your back against the direction of hair growth, though

. Softening the beard before shaving with warm water and soap can help smooth the process.

For women, there are other helpful recommendations.

Makeup selection is easier these days. There are numerous formulations that specifically address the possibility of acne. They are designed not to clog pores. Going light on the foundation can help. Subtle cheek blush is better than slathering it on. Look for makeup labeled ‘non-comedogenic’. ‘Comedones’ is a general term for the most common types of mild acne, including blackheads and whiteheads.

An over-the-counter antibacterial can help prevent acne, but my advice is that it is most helpful after acne has developed. But follow the directions. Over medicating can lead to clogged pores and damaged skin, exactly the conditions that tend to promote acne.

Keeping pores open in order to allow for natural oil movement and shedding dead skin cells is key to minimizing outbreaks. Proper skin care practice aid both.
